Composition

Rosacea can be caused by genetics and is triggered by environmental factors such as emotional stress, spicy food, hot drinks, alcohol consumption, temperature changes, sport, sun exposure or irritant cosmetics.

Several biological dysfunctions are implicated in rosacea: abnormalities in the skin's natural defense system, an excessive nervous response and a damaged and weakened barrier. This causes visible symptoms such as temporary flushing or persistent redness and small visible blood vessels. In the most severe cases, it can cause pimples (the same as in acne), thickening of the skin around the nose and eye symptoms (dryness, inflammation, small visible blood vessels). It also causes non-visible symptoms, such as unpleasant or painful tingling, burning sensations, tightness, itching and dryness of the skin.

Beyond these symptoms, it can also have an impact on quality of life. Rosacea is omnipresent in the patient’s life, and above all unpredictable because it can appear in the form of flare-ups at any time. Because it affects the face, it becomes particularly visible and patients have to be constantly aware of what they eat, drink, do and where they live. Both the visible aspects and the feelings can lead to embarrassment, loss of self-esteem, anxiety, stigmatisation and depression.
